On Saturday, September 13, 2025, the Haus der Kulturen Düsseldorf, together with numerous partners, invites you to the “Düsseldorf ist bunt” summer festival in the Hofgarten. Between the Theatermuseum and the Goethe-Museum, along Jägerhofallee, visitors can look forward to a varied program featuring more than 40 booths and a large stage from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m.

The festival features international music and dance performances, outdoor yoga, drumming activities for children, and culinary specialties from around the world. Numerous organizations and initiatives showcase their work and create opportunities for interaction and connection. Admission is free.

House of Cultures – A Key Integration Project for Urban Society

Since its debut, the “Düsseldorf ist bunt” summer festival has become a staple on the city’s cultural calendar. Now in its third year, it is more than just a cultural event: This year, the festival is entirely dedicated to the future Haus der Kulturen Düsseldorf, which is set to open in 2025 on the Yorcks Campus — in the immediate vicinity of the new Adult Education Center (VHS) and the Düsseldorf University of Applied Sciences (HSD), both of which are also key partners of the Haus. There, an intercultural center for social interaction, education, and culture is taking shape on approximately 600 square meters.

The idea for such a center was conceived nearly 15 years ago, when community organizations, initiatives, and dedicated individuals—together with policymakers and the broader community—joined forces to create a place in Düsseldorf for encounters, dialogue, and participation. After many years of intense discussions, the city council’s decision on funding in the spring of 2025 marked the decisive breakthrough—a milestone for Düsseldorf’s history of immigration and the city’s community as a whole.

Representing and Promoting Cultural Richness

The House of Cultures will serve as a central hub for people with and without an international family background. It embodies the rich diversity of Düsseldorf’s urban society, fosters intercultural exchange, and makes an important contribution to civic participation and democracy.

Mayor Dr. Stephan Keller emphasizes:

Vision: A Place for Dialogue, Education, and Participation

The House of Cultures sees itself as a nonpartisan and non-denominational community center. It aims to provide spaces for associations, initiatives, and engaged citizens, and to contribute to strengthening urban society through educational, cultural, and dialogue programs.

The goals include, among others:

A Partnership of Equals – Collaboration, Consulting, and Concept Development

The Municipal Integration Center (KI) of the City of Düsseldorf is a key partner of the House of Cultures. It brings its many years of experience in integration work to the table and played a key role in the conceptual reorientation of the organization.

Serving as a bridge between the city administration and civil society, the KI ensures that the programs offered by the Haus der Kulturen are tailored to specific target groups, accessible, and of assured quality—with a particular focus on social participation, anti-discrimination, and intercultural openness.
